He hadn't seen much of lam logan since PRIMEVAL and their brief chats in the hospital. Hopefully, they weren't voerworking themselves. Not tat Paxton ad any grounds to say that. Overworking himself was one of the few things he excelled in. Just in case, he had sent some sort of email to let Lam know he needed to speak to him on official grounds. [break][break]

Paxton's ushered in quickly enough, getting shoved into the new knight's office without much flair where he waited quietly, only perking up when the door opened once ore as Lam entered. "Morning Lam. It's good to see you." he said, standing to greet the Gym Leader with a smile. "I won't take too much of your time. Just want to discuss PROJECT SAPPHIRE with you now, especially after having become Virizion's Knight."

it was a surprise to receive correspondence from paxton concordas. admittedly, he didn't know the man too well, and he definitely hadn't really seen him since the events on mt. chimney or what had come directly after. maybe a time or two in passing at league hq, but not much more than that.[break][break]

still, he was happy to oblige the request to meet.[break][break]

he found lam in his office - not really a tidy place by any stretch. a few pidove had roosted on a perch in the corner, and his shinx had decidedly sprawled himself over lam's untouched paperwork.[break][break]

"glad it's under better circumstances," he replied, pushing up his glasses, having not bothered with contacts that day. "take as much of my time as ya need. not many challenges scheduled today." lam scratched at the top of noodle's head, unbothered by the extra company.[break][break]

"only partially a knight," he said after a beat, before pausing. "or well, shared duty, i guess." it was a strange arrangement. "what can i do for you, paxton?"

Paxton sat down in front of Lam's desk, eyeing the little golden Shinx. He pats his pockets for a treat before giving a subtle shake of the head. None today. He was out. "Hope you don't have any lingering pains from Mt. Chimney." he added. He smiled watching the cat stay, unmoved by new people or the extra scritches. [break][break]

"I would like to invite Virizion's Part-time, Verdant Knight to become one of SAPPHIRE's gym leader team leads." he said, handing over a general proposal for Lam to look over after their meeting, should he want to review it. "PROJECT SAPPHIRE is dedicating itself to the research of legends, and to assist various team leads will help organize groups of volunteers to go out on research jobs or excursions." he takes a pause to make sure Lam is following before continuing. "You have a penchant for teaching, I thought you might be interest. Team leads will guide and mentor our volunteers as they work through their assignments, and I want you, in particular, to be a gym challenge mentor." Who better to explain the ins and outs of the gym challenge than an actual gym leader?

A short shake of the head. “No, I’m fine. I didn’t take too many hits, thankfully.”[break][break]
He takes the proposal, blinking down at the neatly designed cover as he listens to the offer that Paxton lays out. A low whistle follows. “Lil ol’ me, huh?” Lam murmurs as he flips open to the first page. Absently, he adjusts the glasses on his face as his eyes dart over the words on the page, and take in the graphics and charts that litter its contents.[break][break]
All too suddenly, he felt far away from who he’d been even just a year ago, and a part of him ached over it.[break][break]
You have a penchant for teaching.[break][break]
Lam looks up again at this, a crooked smile pulling at his mouth, “The league has been paying closer attention than I thought,” he says lightly, though that’s not wholly true. Of course they’ve been taking note on higher ranked figures, and of course he’s aware of that on some distant level. In that, he doesn’t think too hard about it because it’s a given. If he were doing something wrong, he surely would’ve heard about it long before now.[break][break]
In fact, he’s doing the opposite of wrong, if an offer like this is being placed in his lap. “I do think there is a lot of merit in the gym challenge,” he says then, leaning back in his chair to better observe the other man. He sets the report on the desktop, and Noodle rolls onto his back with a stretch–pawing at an upturned corner of the pages.[break][break]
“I’d be happy to mentor trainers that come through. It’s an important line to draw–what’s only a challenge, and when it goes beyond that. Especially when it comes to kids.” War, perilous situations. It was well and good to guide them through the structure and routine of battling, but it was only a competition. A sport.

He nodded, relieved Lam hadn't gotten hurt. It seemed like for the most part, the storming party managed to avoid too much damage. Paxton's eyes flickered from the golden Shinx and back to its trainer before nodding. “Well, we figured a gym leader specializing in double battles might enjoy a role like this.” he said, brushing off the praise. [break][break]

For the most part, he seemed pleased with the offer. “There will be some flexibility. PROJECT SAPPHIRE is additional duties on top of your gym leader responsibilities, but I don't intend to overwork you. Simply, be proactive.” he said, gesturing at the papers again. “Naturally, I would like you to visit for small medical evaluations due to your bond with MATIAS SILPH and Virizion. But I mean for you to be someone who helps guide those who chose to take on the gym challenge.” There's a poignant pause before he continued. “We want to develop their bonds, and encourage their goals within the gym challenge. At most, they will have the option to battle sims to ensure should a disaster strike Hoenn, trainers can survive and escape harm. Should any trainer wish to learn something more advanced to stay on the battlefield, they may be directed towards one of the Officer leads.” [break][break]

Paxton, ever prepared, has his own packet. He flips to the page in question. “I want to reach out to younger trainers who may be slipping through the system and need things like mentorship or counseling. You're not expected to encourage children into soldiers.”

It was no small thing that their group had been safe throughout the wake of Groudon’s rampaging. Had any of them been seriously injured in the process, the situation might have crumbled apart to a far worse outcome. They shifted away from the subject, and he was relieved for it. The what ifs that had lingered in his mind were ones he didn’t like to contemplate. “You’re right about that. Working with younger trainers is something I do enjoy.”[break][break]
There was a certain fulfillment that came with instruction and coaching. As much as Lam enjoyed competitive battling for himself, there was something that came from being able to mentor younger trainers, and encourage them toward their goals—as simple and small as the gym circuit sort of seemed in comparison to the chaos that unfolded in the region around them on a routine basis.[break][break]
But it was those small things, those inane acts that kept them grounded and together in one piece. Allowed them to find footing and root in place rather than fracture apart into isolated splinters.[break][break]
Paxton assuaged his concerns easily, and Lam nodded along as he looked down at the paperwork again. He flipped through the pages, glancing up now and again to show he was giving the man his attention. There was value in what he said. “Good. Because I’m no soldier, myself.” No matter how much it had started to feel that way. “But mentoring? I can do that. I signed on to be a teacher, and advise in this capacity. That’s what I wanted to do in the first place.” His fingers tapped on the desk as he sorted through his thoughts. “I’d be happy to help with Sapphire.”

"I pick up on things." he said, allowing himself to flash a grin at the gym leader. Deputy of Intel and all that. "I've chosen actual soldiers, people like me, to deal with that, Should someone chose that path." he said, assuring Lam he was fine. "I'm tailoring this positions to your strengths. And I think there's a lot of stigma about the gym challenge in times of crisis with pulling young trainers for war and all that..." he said before trialing off. [break][break]

The subject of numbers was tough but at the end of the day their policy was clear: crisis grounds to be cleared out for professionals. "I think, even in all this shit, kids- people need something to strive for that isn't the destruction of Rocket." Let people like Paxton take care of that. [break][break]

His hands were already bloody, and his heart broken. Let him shoulder this until he died. He thinks of Genevieve Cromwell and Elise Calcifet . He thinks of annalise henderson . They'd all taken very different paths due to circumstance. Some before they were ready to. [break][break]

If he could prevent someone's dreams being ripped away like his were, he would. [break][break]

He brightens up, not realizing he'd dulled in his act. "Good, I'll loop you in with the rest of our leads. And again, I know you've got your hands full, so it's only a few days." he said getting up and putting away his papers. "There will be an orientation to get everyone on the same page of course. More info to come, etc, etc." he said as he stretched out his hand towards Lam. [break][break]

"Good to have you on the team, Gym Leader Logan. May this make you more recognizable." he said, adding a little tease at the end.

“I can tell,” he replied, a dry laugh following as he smiled back. Not that Lam was going out of his way to hide that fondness for mentorship he’d picked up at some point. Or maybe it was just baked into his system, growing up an elder brother. He nodded slowly, and pushed his glasses up into the nest of his emerald hair. He took the moment to rub his eyes. “That’s good, yeah. You’re definitely right in that regard. If we can derail the idea that the gym challenge is fit or designed for militant training, I think we’re better for it.”[break][break]
It was a foolish idea, of course. Competitive battling for sport was vastly different than combat driven battle. And it was good that someone like paxton concordas was in place to dispel the notion that they could be synonymous with one another. Lam aimed to help him in that.[break][break]
Another smile, smaller than before, tugged at his mouth. “Yeah. I think the region is in dire need of the reminder that there is more than all of the conflict. It sort of crowds out the idea of what the future might be like.” Beyond the fighting, and the tension lines. That there were other things that could be valued and treasured.[break][break]
In that, they were also of the same mind. There were so many people younger than him who had been thrust into this. He himself hardly felt capable. He wasn’t a trained specialist. But if this could pave the way for others to feel safe without being forced into the thick of things, then he was all for it.[break][break]
He gives Pax a thumbs up, his own mood perking up to match the other’s. “Sounds good. I’m happy to work with any of them when the opportunity facilitates it. Just let me know where and when, and I’ll be there.” On the desk, Noodle rolled onto his belly, tail swishing as he looked up at Paxton with a chirping mew.[break][break]
Lam snorted, shaking his head. “Already got enough attention. Let others have the spotlight,” he waved a hand dismissively, before offering it to shake. “But I’m happy to play my part in this.”

"Hoenn's used to crisis. People forget there's options even if you can't leave or escape." he said with a shrug. "The public is short sighted, hopefully we can continue to remind them of alternatives." Besides, the more civilains out of the way in the battlefield, the better overall for the League. Paxton smiled down at Noodle giving the sunshine yellow shins a soft pat on the head before clapping his hands together with Lam, a real life version of the muscled men handshaker MEME. "Whatever you say, Lam. I'm just glad to another person I can trust on the team." He knew Lam's personality would fit right in with the program. He shakes with him before letting go. "Anyway, I'll leave you now to do your gym challenges. See you next week!"
